How to Pick a Mother of the Bride or Groom Dress That Will Make You Feel Confident!

It’s a big day for the mother of the bride and groom, too, so it’s important for them to dress the part. What do you wear to look chic and stylish when you are greeting guests, being ushered down the aisle, and posing for family wedding photos? A dress that you feel confident in is key to looking and feeling your best on your child’s wedding day. Keep reading to see some of our favorite mother of the bride and groom dresses for a range of different body types, with expert tips to flatter every woman.

Love Your Legs

Show off your legs by wearing a short sheath dress. Opting for a shorter style allows you to experiment with different shades and silhouettes, all while remaining comfortable. Plus, it will accentuate your fabulous pair of shoes!

Styles 9101, 7078, WBM3687, WGIN5281

Find Comfortable Coverage

Looking for a long-sleeve option that doesn’t feel restrictive? Try a mother of the bride dress with 3/4 length sleeves, sheer sleeves, or a gown with a chiffon cape overlay. You’ll get the coverage you need while looking stylish!

Styles 2475, D40NY22366, WBM2263, D40NY23234

Define Your Waist

Looking to add definition to your waistline? Dresses that hit at the natural waist and have a fuller skirt are the perfect way to highlight this feature. Whether you choose a chic ballgown or a trendy high-low style, these options do wonders to create the illusion of curves and make a sophisticated choice for any mother of the bride.

Styles D40NY23247, D40NY23277, D40NY23244, WBM2575

Flatter Your Figure

Dresses with an empire waist emphasize your décolletage and help enhance your natural silhouette. Lovely details like ruching or cascading ruffles help the fabric come together at the waist, hugging you in all the right places for a figure flattering fit!

Styles WBM2813, D40NY23231, D40NY22670, WGIN5141

Show Off Shoulders

Show off your shoulders in an off the shoulder or strapless gown for an effortlessly elegant look. For more support, pick a spaghetti strap dress with off-the-shoulder cap sleeves!

Style WBM3663, D40NY23247, D40NY23231, D40NY23244

Accentuate Arms

Halter or Tank style dresses are a beautiful way to highlight your arms and show off some one-of-a-kind jewelry. Add outerwear to any of these styles for a perfect day to night look, or for a bit of extra coverage (and warmth!) at your next event.

Styles WBM2831, WBM2411V2, WBM3667, WBM3178

Feel Pretty in Pantsuits

If a dress doesn’t suit your style, we recommend trying a pantsuit. They’re casual, chic, and (most importantly) comfortable. Take your look to the next level by adding accessories that complement the beading, embellishments, or sparkle on your pantsuit!

Styles WBM2418V1, 5012, 28865, 9862

Finding the perfect style that suits you can be a daunting task, but we are here to help! 5 looks mom will love

It’s likely that your wedding dress was chosen with your mom or your future mother-in-law’s expert insight. So, why not do the same and help her find a dress she deserves that’s comfortable, chic, and fitting for the formality of the big day! We’re sharing mother of the bride (and groom!) trends that stand the test of time, plus our current favorite dresses for pulling them off.

Off-the-Shoulder

Style D40NY22242

Off-the-shoulder or cold-shoulder gowns offer a stylishly inviting detail and create an overall flattering look for mom. This sleek, satin gown shines under the lights while the cuffed neckline creates a stunning focal point. Keep it simple and let the dress do the talking or amp up mom’s look with eye-catching accessories that will be sure to make her feel her best!

Ball Gown

MOB Style VCRS1482

Style VCRS1482

The ball gown is a classic silhouette when you think of weddings. Not only for the bride, but the dress shape is also fitting for the MOB and MOG, too! Formal when paired with shiny satin, but the unexpected high-low hem is a modern take we are still loving.

Capelets + Sleeves

Style WBM2815

Pretty cropped sleeves or elegant billowy long sleeves offer arm coverage while still remaining stylish. Subtle illusion details or a touch of sparkle are universally flattering and appropriate for mom.

Sequins, Florals + Embroidery

Style D40NY22236

Prints, patterns, and shimmering dress details will always be a yes in our book. Dresses incorporating these details strike a balance between glamour and ease with their soft silhouette and striking characteristics. This floral embroidered dress features sequin touches and offers classic glamour that will make mom feel (and look) her best!

Pantsuits and Jumpsuits

Style 950136

Opting for coordinated separates or easy-to-wear jumpsuits takes the guesswork out of putting together the perfect outfit. And let’s be honest, pants are better for the dance floor! While the best choice for comfort, mother of the bride pantsuits and jumpsuits are incredibly elegant, available in sophisticated colors, and pretty details.

What the mother of the bride should wear, from a casual to a formal affair.

You’ve helped your daughter find the one, time to do a little dress shopping of your own! From what trends to look for, what flatters your body type, and all of the questions you never thought to ask, finding the perfect mother of the bride dress is no easy feat. Another thing to consider: the formality of the wedding. You never want to be over or under-dressed. Here are some foolproof styles, shapes, and colors of mother of the bride dresses for every wedding style.

Casual

casual wedding styles for mother of the bride

Style WBM2580 & 7008D

Is your girl throwing a casual, laidback wedding? Opt for a look with a little less frill (but a ton of style, nonetheless!). A three-piece pantsuit offers a casual look and most importantly a comfortable option. Looking for a dress? Try a lace sheath dress with a trendy asymmetrical capelet for an incredibly stylish look that won’t upstage the bride or venue.

Cocktail

cocktail wedding styles for mother of the bride

Style WBM2507 & VCRS1482

A cocktail or semi-formal dress code calls for dresses with a little more luxurious details. Think touches of beading and metallics or satin fabrics. For a more unique style try a dress with figure-flattering draping for a modern look. To keep these looks from getting too formal, playful shades lighten the mood.

Formal

two mom's a wedding reception wearing formal wedding attire

Style WBM2578 & WBM2537

The ultimate formal wedding calls for dresses that pull out all the stops. Gowns with fancy fabrics, luxe textures, and elegant shapes, like a ball gown or mermaid, are perfect for a black-tie soiree. Opt for neutral hues like champagne or blush (that complement the rest of the party) for that ultra-sophisticated feel.

Which formality are you shopping for? Explore even more mother-of-bride dresses by wedding style and find accessories to complete the look!

12 important duties the Mother of the bride can play at the wedding!

Mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend…the bride isn’t the only woman who plays an important role in the wedding. Mother and all of those important mother figurers provide us a shoulder to lean on especially in the wedding planning process. As a bride, the mother or mother figure can be such an integral part in the planning and celebrating of her special day. Mother of the bride duties can vary but we’ve rounded up 12 special ways a mom can play an important role in the wedding planning process and the big day.

  1. Participate In Dress Shopping – Dress shopping is a big moment in the wedding planning process so asking your mom or mother figure to come along is very special. Having a close circle of people with you as you dress shop can help you decide on which dress to say yes to.

2. Walk You Down The Aisle – While the tradition may be for the bride’s father to walk her down the aisle, it has become extremely popular for a bride to have both her mother and father walk her down or just the mother.

3. Give a speech at the reception – The conventional thinking was that the mother and father of the bride were the “host” of the wedding reception because tradition was they would pay for the event. In today’s world we know many weddings don’t rely solely on the parents of the bride paying for the wedding but it is still a honor to ask the mother along with the father to welcome the guests with a toast.

4. Host and/or attend the bridal shower – While the bridal party is responsible for hosting the bridal shower it seems more MOB’s are being an active member in the planning process and in some cases are even hosting the event.

5. Help craft the guest list – One the first major tasks a couple needs to take on is creating the guest list. Asking the MOB for help with outlining who should be invited and assigning her the task of collecting all of the contact information for the guests is a fantastic way to get the MOB in the planning process and take some stress off the bride.

6. Participate in venue search – Of course the couple will want to see all the venues they are considering but before a visit to the venue can happen many times the bride will need help researching venues, enquiring if they are available and coordinating a venue tour. This is a perfect job of the MOB who might not be as busy as the bride-to-be.

7. Coordinate the MOB and MOG wedding day attire – Once the bride has selected her wedding dress and the bridal party has a clear idea on what attire they will be wearing it is time for the MOB and MOG to select their outfits. Many times the MOB and MOG will work together and share ideas around outfits so that they don’t dress in something too similar.

8. Advise on the seating chart – Seating charts can be tricky and figuring out how to blend together two families and countless friends and relatives can be a lot. Asking for assistance and tackling the seating chart is a great way to get the MOB involved.

9. Stand in the post ceremony receiving line – There is a growing trend to bring back the receiving line at weddings. The receiving line is where the couple and bridal party greet the guests post ceremony. Asking the MOB to be a central part of that line is a lovely way to honor her important role in the day.

10. Borrow her jewelry, veil or something else special as your “something borrowed” – Many times the bride will look for a meaningful way to incorporate something “borrowed” from the MOB or another mother figure. Think about asking to borrow jewelry, her veil or something else you can have with you as you walk down the aisle.

11. Host the farewell brunch the day after the wedding – Many couples will host a farewell brunch the day after the wedding as a way to say goodbye to their guests who traveled for the wedding. Most of the time this event will take place at the hotel where the majority of the guests are staying. There is no set rule who should host this wedding event but it is a nice event for the MOB to take on and coordinate.

12. Be the vendor contact on wedding day – The bride should only be focused on enjoying her wedding day but it is encouraged to give all the wedding vendors a point of contact on the big day if they have questions. Assign the MOB this role can help take pressure off the bride!

Let’s Hear From Real Brides!

Photographed is my Great-Aunt Paulette. I come from a big family, with a hosts of amazing aunts – Paulette is by far my favorite! When I lost my Mom my senior year of high school, Paulette welcomed me with opened and loving arms to live with her for as long as I needed. To know her is to love her- She truly is the rock of our family.

Do you have a favorite memory with her from wedding planning and/or your wedding day?

I have so many great memories from our wedding day! My Aunt Paulette has a fear a flying. In fact, she has never been on a air plane before, until the week of our wedding! She put her fear aside to attend our most special day! Because my Aunt Paulette means so much to me, I asked her to walk me down the aisle. It’s a memory I will cherish forever!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from her?

When life doesn’t go as planned, keep trying. What’s meant to be will happen, on Gods timing.

My mom inspires me to live authentically. Her favorite parenting line is “actions speak louder than words” and for me that always meant to show up and be present. My words mean nothing if my actions don’t match.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from her?

The best advice my mom has ever given me is to remain true to myself.

Tell us about the beautiful woman you’re pictured with

My mom is one of the most amazing women I know! She’s got a servant’s heart and is always looking for ways to help those around her. Her beautiful smile lights up any room!

Do you have a favorite memory with her from wedding planning and/or your wedding day?

Going into anything when wedding planning, my mom always asked me first, “what do you want? I will fight for it.” My mom was determined that no one would push me into making a decision about the wedding just to please them.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from her?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received from my mom is honestly to just try my best and then let it go! From college to my first job to becoming a wife, my mom always encouraged me to appreciate the little victories and let my worries go with the knowledge that I am giving my all.

Tell us about the beautiful woman you’re pictured with

My mother is my best friend and always my shoulder to lean on. She has a beautiful soul and I admire her so much.

How does she inspire you?

My mom inspires me to be patient and graceful. She continuously shows others peace and love throughout her day.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from her?
The best advice my mother has given me is to be true to yourself and to take the path in life that will make you truly happy.

Tell us about the beautiful woman you’re pictured with

My beautiful mom is a firecracker who loves with her whole being, serves without hesitation, brightens any room she walks in, and will make every person she talks to feel loved, seen, and known.

Do you have a favorite memory with her from wedding planning and/or your wedding day?

On the morning of my wedding I woke up in my childhood bedroom. My mom came into my room with the most intentional and sweet gifts in her hands. As I opened the gifts and read her sweet card we cried and prayed together. This moment was so intimate and magnified the bond we have as mother and daughter. I would not be who I am, or the wife I am today without her wisdom, love, care, and guidance.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from her?

She has modeled so well how to be vulnerable and how to communicate feelings. In our family we share the depths of our hearts which has made us all very close. The way she lived her life and modeled this to us was the best life advice given. To put the advice into words I learned to bring our darkness to light, because once the light exposes darkness we can then begin the beautiful process of healing.

If we’ve learned anything from these brides, it’s that mother of the bride duties can vary in the physical ways she contributes to the day, but there’s no doubt that her most important job is to be a guiding light showing her support and love for the bride.

Today’s Real Wedding is extra special. As a David’s Bridal stylist, Lizzie has helped countless brides find their dream wedding dress. Today, we’re sharing how she helped her bridal party, mother, and mother of the groom find their day of dresses. Read on for more of Lizzie and Zachary’s rustic barn wedding in Ohio!

How did you and your fiancé meet? And how did you know that he was the one?

We actually met my junior year of high school at Pizza Hut! Fun fact: his parents met at Pizza Hut also and have been married for 31+ years! I knew he was the one when I told him about a book I loved and he went out and purchased it for himself to read so we could talk about the book together.

Tell us your proposal story?

We go to the pumpkin patch every year and it’s one of my favorite things to do with him! So, he placed my ring on a tiny, baby pumpkin and handed it to me. He didn’t say a word; he was so nervous and just shaking and smiling ear to ear! Of course, I said YES!

What inspired your bridesmaid color palette?

My love for the desert, terracotta shades, and neutral colors really inspired my color palette! I wanted something different from the well-known burgundy, navy, and blush pink bridesmaids dresses I kept seeing!

How was your experience dress shopping with your bridal party?

I absolutely loved it. I just took all the girls in my bridal party shopping and I let them all try on dresses that I liked and we group voted! It was a blast!

Tell us about your Mother of the Bride/Mother of the Groom looks?

I wanted my mother of the bride and mother of the groom dresses to complement our color palette but not be exactly the same, so I did a mauve dress and a deep purple dress and it was beautiful! I gave them each a color and let them pick whatever they felt most beautiful/comfortable in!

Do you have any advice for future brides?

Trust me, only take the most important people with you! It may hurt some people’s feelings (they’ll get over it) but your opinion is the one that matters most! Once you have too many people, your vision and your dream dress seem to get pushed aside.

Also, don’t be afraid to try on styles you don’t think you’ll necessarily like! You don’t get married every day so you’re not also going to know what styles look good on you until you try them on!

Tell us about your wedding day!

We got married on Friday the 13th  at one of the most beautiful venues I’ve ever been to! The weather was absolutely perfect, the sun was shining and it was just magical. We had all white tablecloths with terracotta napkins and centerpieces to make it pop and it was BEAUTIFUL!

Was there a highlight or most memorable moment of the day?

Watching my fiancé get emotional and teary-eyed when he turned around to look at me or our first dance will probably be my most memorable moment from that day!

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

My nephew was our ring bearer! He’s a little younger and didn’t get a nap that day. So, when it came time for him to walk down the aisle, he took the ring box and threw it as far as he could!

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day or while you were planning the wedding?

I wish more people would’ve told me to do what I wanted and to not listen to everyone’s opinions!

Featuring style WG1374

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

For our favors, we made personalized coffee bags with our favorite flavor of coffee in them!

What advice do you have for brides that are planning their weddings right now?

My best planning advice would be to keep a journal of everything you like, must have for the wedding, colors, patterns, dresses, etc., and to do WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY! Planning is beyond stressful, Pinterest will be your best friend, and your dream wedding is never too far out of reach! Don’t let anyone else’s opinion cloud your view of YOUR wedding! Do what makes you and your fiancé happy! That’s who the day is about! It’s not about anyone else but celebrating your guys’ love!

Is there anything you wish you could tell the brides-to-be out there?

You might shed many tears along the way, but don’t let it get you down! At the end of the day, do what makes you and your fiancé happy!! Wedding planning is such a stressful but magical experience, don’t be afraid to ask for help but don’t let people steer you away from your dream wedding. Have fun with it and don’t forget to smile!! You’re going to be the most beautiful bride ever!
